Creating a Scene

Hi! I’m back with another fun card in my journey to become a Certified Educator for my favorite brand, Altenew. As my classes continue, I’m learning more and more about color, layout and some cool tips and tricks. This card was created for the “Seasonal Scene Building” class with Nichol Magouirk. Admittedly, scene building is not my style, but I did end up combining two techniques into one card.

I decided to create a cascade of flowers from the Painted Flowers set. Then I decided to go a little further and use a technique called “spotlight”. It’s pretty simple, but striking - you use two different color palettes for the image - one subtle, one vibrant.

There are different ways to do this, one way is to create a window in the card. I tried this (four times!) and could never get the windows to match up, so I went to Plan B. Instead of cutting a window into the card, I decided to use a frame to spotlight the color image, and cut a frame from gold cardstock. I used the Gentleman’s Gray mini cube set for the gray flowers. For continuity between the grey and color flowers, I used the darkest color from that set, Charcoal Suit, to stamp the outline for all the flowers., Then I needed to decide the placement of the frame, so I could determine which flowers to stamp in grey and which in color.

One I positioned the frame, I drew a light pencil line around the outside to mark where the color flowers should begin and end. With that done, I finally started stamping! I used the other colors from the Gentlemen’s Grey set as layers for the subtle cards, and used 3 other sets for the blue, pink and purple flowers: Cool Summer Night, Cherry Blossom and Enchanted Garden. I like buying the mini cube sets, it’s a good way to start collecting Altenew inks.

I needed a greeting, and went to the Crafty Friends set for the “You Inspire Me”. I cut the stamped panel to 4” x 5.25”, and mounted it to an A2 size card that matched the blue flowers.

I wanted to bring in the gold color again, so I decided that a few Satin Gold Sequins would be perfect.

It was a rough start, but a strong finish - I’m really happy with the final card. I hoped you enjoyed my journey.
